Megaways Mechanics and Game Parameters

Last checked: 2 articles in this guide 3 min read By SlotConfig Editorial Team

A wide slot machine with six reels holding different numbers of symbols

A Megaways slot pays on ways rather than fixed lines: the number of ways on a spin is the number of symbols showing on each reel, multiplied together, and it changes from spin to spin because the reels change height. You still pay one total stake per spin, whatever the number of ways. Megaways titles are common in Ontario: 58 of the 289 OLG.ca slot pages we collected on October 19, 2026 had Megaways in the name, and the highest RTP among them was Gus’s Gold Megaways at up to 96.86%. The same Megaways title can run at a lower RTP elsewhere: The Dog House Megaways showed 96.55% at OLG.ca and bet365 but 94.55% at Betty.

What this section checks, and why

Megaways games are marketed on big numbers of ways, which say little about what a spin costs or returns. This section separates the mechanics from the parameters that decide your cost: the stake range each casino allows, the RTP version it runs, and the pace Ontario’s rules set. Mechanics are explained with arithmetic; parameters come from the casinos’ own game pages.

How is the number of ways counted?

Multiply the symbols showing on each reel. Take a made-up spin on six reels showing 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 symbols: 2 × 3 × 4 × 5 × 6 × 7 = 5,040 ways. On the next spin the reels might show 7 symbols each, and the count jumps to 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 = 117,649. These figures are illustrations; each game’s rules screen gives its own reel layout and maximum. Matching symbols on neighbouring reels count as a win wherever they land on each reel, and each combination of positions counts as a separate way.

The number of ways changes how a win is counted, not what you pay. Your stake is fixed when you press spin.

What do Megaways games cost to play in Ontario?

The stake range and the RTP version are the two parameters that matter, and they vary by game and by casino:

  • Gus’s Gold Megaways at OLG.ca: RTP 95.97% to 96.86%, C$0.20 to C$5 a spin.
  • Temple of Treasure Megaways at OLG.ca: 96.46% to 96.85%, C$0.20 to C$20.
  • Madame Destiny Megaways at OLG.ca: 96.56% to 96.67%, C$0.20 to C$100.
  • Money Stacks Megaways at OLG.ca: 96.5% to 96.53%, C$0.20 to C$120.
  • Buffalo King Megaways at FanDuel Casino (Ontario): C$0.20 to C$600.

Ontario’s pace rules shape the hourly cost. AGCO standard 2.18 requires at least 2.5 seconds between game starts, so the most spins possible in an hour is 3,600 ÷ 2.5 = 1,440. At C$0.20 a spin that is C$288 wagered; at an RTP of 96.55%, the expected cost is about C$288 × 0.0345, or roughly C$9.94 an hour. The same hour on a version at 94.55% costs about C$15.70.

Does a Megaways slot return more than other slots?

Not because it is a Megaways game. The return comes from the version the casino runs, and Megaways titles cover the same range as other slots. Betty’s versions of The Dog House Megaways (94.55%), Great Rhino Megaways (94.69%) and Madame Destiny Megaways (94.63%) all sat about two points below Pragmatic Play’s own figures for those games.

The guides in this section

  • How Megaways slots work. Counting ways, what more ways do to your stake, how a win is counted, cascading wins, and what an hour of play costs under Ontario’s rules.
  • Where to play Megaways slots in Ontario. Which Megaways titles OLG.ca, bet365, BetRivers, Betty and FanDuel carry, how their bet ranges compare, and where the highest RTPs are.

How we checked

We collected OLG.ca’s 289 public slot game pages on October 19, 2026 and counted the titles with Megaways in the name. We read Betty’s game pages and bet365’s lobby panels from Ontario on October 19 and 20, and FanDuel’s home lobby on October 19, without logging in. RTPs and bet ranges are as shown on the casino’s page that day. Reel layouts and maximum ways come from each game’s rules screen, which we did not record game by game.

What we could not confirm

  • The reel layout and maximum number of ways of each Megaways title: they are in the in-game rules, which we did not record.
  • RTPs at casinos whose game rules open only after login.

Read a Megaways game before you spin

Open the rules screen and find four things: the number of reels and the maximum ways, how a win is counted, the RTP, and the stake range. Then multiply your stake by the spins you expect to play to see what you will wager, and apply the RTP to see the expected cost.
