Slot Rules and Special Game Modes
In Ontario, slot games run under rules that change how you play them. The AGCO’s standards ban auto-play, playing several slots at once, and turbo, quick spin or slam stop features, and require at least 2.5 seconds between game starts. A slot may not celebrate a payout equal to or smaller than your last stake as a win, and it must show your session’s net position in Canadian dollars. Special modes sit inside those rules: bonus-buy slots exist in Ontario lobbies, but their feature prices appear only inside the game, and “penny” slots still cost the full stake per spin, from C$0.10 at the lowest in the lobbies we checked on October 19 and 20, 2026.

What this section covers, and why
Slots look simple, and that is where the misunderstandings start: a “win” that is smaller than your stake, a coin value mistaken for the price of a spin, a bonus price shown in multiples of the stake instead of dollars. This section explains how a slot works, how to read its paytable and stake, and how special modes change the cost, using Ontario’s standards and the casinos’ own game pages.
What do Ontario’s slot rules require?
The AGCO’s Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming set the frame for every regulated Ontario site:
- 2.16: no auto-play for slots.
- 2.17: no playing multiple slots at the same time.
- 2.18: at least 2.5 seconds between the start of one game and the next.
- 2.19: no turbo, quick spin or slam stop.
- 2.20 and 2.21: no celebrating returns equal to or below the last total stake as wins, and the session’s net position shown in Canadian dollars.
- 4.06: game rules or help pages must give the return to player and other information that affects play before a bet.
- 4.08: every game and random number generator must be approved by the Registrar or certified by an AGCO-registered testing laboratory before it is offered.
The pace rule also sets a ceiling you can calculate: 3,600 seconds ÷ 2.5 = 1,440 spins an hour at most.
How do special modes change the cost?
Bonus buys. Some slots let you pay to go straight to the bonus feature. In our check of 289 OLG.ca slot pages, the clearest case was Chicken Burst Megaways, whose description mentions bonus buy options, with an RTP of 94.25% and bets from C$0.20 to C$100, but no feature price on the page. The price appears inside the game, next to the buy button, usually as a multiple of your stake. Convert it into dollars before you press the button: at a C$1 stake, a price of 100 times the stake is C$100 for one feature.
Penny slots. A small coin value is not a small spin. The total stake is the coin value multiplied by the lines or bet multiplier, and that total leaves your balance on every spin. The lowest total stakes we recorded in Ontario lobbies were C$0.10, for example Divine Fortune Gold at OLG.ca, which runs from C$0.10 to C$14 a spin; most titles started at C$0.20. At the maximum Ontario pace, 1,440 spins of C$0.10 add up to C$144 wagered in an hour.
The guides in this section
- How to play online slots. Reading the paytable, setting the stake within the bet range, and telling a real win from a payout smaller than your stake.
- How online slots work. The random number generator, why spins are independent, why a slot is never “due”, and who tests the RNG in Ontario.
- Bonus-buy slots in Ontario. Which bonus-buy slots we found, where the feature price appears, how to work out its cost, and whether buying changes the RTP.
- Penny slots explained. Coin value against total stake, the lowest stakes in Ontario lobbies, and what an hour of penny slots costs.
How we checked
We read the AGCO’s Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming, last updated May 14, 2026, and collected 289 public slot game pages at OLG.ca on October 19, 2026, with other Ontario lobbies read on October 19 and 20 without logging in. Stakes and RTPs are as shown on each game page that day. Feature prices inside games were not recorded, because they appear only once a game is open.
What we could not confirm
- Bonus-buy feature prices: shown only inside the game, at your stake.
- Which Ontario casinos disable bonus buys on particular titles: lobby pages do not say.
Before your next spin
Read the paytable and rules, note the total stake per spin rather than the coin value, and work out what an hour costs at that stake: stake × 1,440 × (1 minus the RTP) is the most you should expect to lose on average at full pace. If a game offers a bonus buy, convert the price into dollars at your stake before you use it.
