Slot RTP Explained: What the Percentage Does and Does Not Tell You
RTP, or return to player, is the percentage of all money staked on a slot that the game is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. A slot with an RTP of 96% returns C$96 for every C$100 wagered in the long run, so the average cost of play is C$4 per C$100. It does not tell you what will happen in a session, and it is not fixed per game: the same title can run at different RTPs at different casinos. On October 19 and 20, 2026, the RTPs shown on 289 OLG.ca slot pages ran from 86.0% to 96.95%, and Betty in Ontario showed most Pragmatic Play titles we checked about 2 points below the provider’s own figure.

What does an RTP percentage mean in dollars?
RTP is an average over all the spins a game will ever play, not a promise to you. The simplest way to use it is to convert it into a cost:
- At 96% RTP, every C$100 you wager costs C$4 on average.
- At 94% RTP, the same C$100 costs C$6, half as much again.
- At 90% RTP, it costs C$10.
The amount you wager is not the amount you deposit. If you deposit C$50 and play C$0.50 spins, winnings get staked again, so C$50 can easily turn into several hundred dollars of total wagers over a session. The RTP applies to that total.
How much does RTP matter over a session?
More than the percentage suggests, because of the number of spins. Ontario’s standards require at least 2.5 seconds between game starts, which caps play at 24 spins a minute, or 1,440 in an hour. At C$0.50 a spin, an hour at that pace is C$720 wagered. At 96.5% RTP the expected cost of that hour is about C$25; at 94.5%, about C$40. The game is the same; the lower version costs about C$14 more per hour. Slower play lowers both numbers, but the gap between the versions stays at 2 points of everything you stake.
Why does the same game show different RTPs?
Because a provider can supply one game in more than one RTP version, and each casino runs one of them. Our checks show it directly:
- Gates of Olympus showed 96.50% at bet365 (Ontario), matching Pragmatic Play’s own figure, and 94.5% at Betty (Ontario).
- Great Rhino Megaways showed 96.47% to 96.58% at OLG.ca and bet365, against Pragmatic Play’s single figure of 96.50%, and 94.69% at Betty.
- Fury of Anubis showed 96.52% at all three, the one Pragmatic title that matched at Betty.
At 2 points apart, the lower version costs C$2 more per C$100 wagered. Our game-and-casino RTP matrix lists 29 such pairs.
Why do some casinos show a range instead of one number?
Of 289 OLG.ca slot pages we collected, 73 showed a range, such as 86.0% to 90.5% for Blazing Bison Gold Blitz King Millions or 96.73% to 96.95% for Divine Fortune Gold. OLG.ca does not explain what the range depends on. A range is still useful: the low end is the figure to plan with.
What does RTP not tell you?
- Your result in a session. RTP describes the long run. In a single session you can win or lose far more than the average, in either direction.
- How often a slot pays. Two games with the same RTP can pay in very different patterns: many small wins or rare large ones. Some casinos show a volatility label alongside RTP; bet365 (Ontario), for example, shows RTP, reels and a volatility label in its lobby info panel.
- Whether the casino is fair. RTP is set by the game’s design. In Ontario, fairness is a separate requirement: the AGCO’s standards say every game and random number generator must be approved by the Registrar or certified by an AGCO-registered independent testing laboratory before it is offered.
- The best game. A small difference in RTP matters less than how much you stake per spin and how many spins you play.
Where does the RTP figure come from?
Ontario’s AGCO standards require game rules or help pages to give comprehensive and accurate information, before a bet, on odds of winning, payout odds or returns to players. That is why regulated Ontario sites show an RTP in the game information, and sometimes on the casino’s game page as well: OLG.ca and Betty put it on a public game page, and bet365 in a lobby info panel. Providers publish their own figure on their game pages. Some operators make claims about RTP: Luxury Casino in Ontario says it offers the best RTP version its providers supply, which is its own statement.
What we could not confirm
- What OLG.ca’s RTP ranges depend on.
- The RTP inside the game window at Betty and bet365: we read the figure from the game page and the lobby panel, not from inside a game.
Use RTP in three steps
- Before you play, find the RTP in the game’s info or rules panel, or on the casino’s game page.
- Compare it with the provider’s figure for the same game. If the casino’s figure is lower, you are on a lower version.
- Convert it into a cost for your planned session: total amount you expect to wager × (100% minus RTP).
